Don’t let your images fade away

Dec 19, 2018 | Uncategorized

For those of us old enough to recall, there used to be a video tape commercial for Scotch video tapes and it highlighted the features of their video tapes with the slogan “re record, not fade away” https://youtu.be/g4rv81zxBGQ

Its message was in regards to the tape quality and not losing precious recordings.

Well, this message is all the more true these days. At Share My photographs we witness all too often peoples memories fading away to be lost forever.

The thing that prompted this blog post is a current customer and her collection of images – This lady is in her 90’s and along with her late husband travelled the world and was a prolific Photographer. In fact most of these journeys were as part of photo expeditions and they were often accompanied by famous photographers. She describes herself as a passionate amateur. But, as professional photographers ourselves, please believe us when we say her work rivals and often betters many acclaimed travel Photographers.

She has thousands of 35mm slides all categorized and kept in very good condition along with stacks of accompanying memoir’s – Very detailed stories to accompany the beautiful images.

Along with her Husband they used to travel around B.C and give photo presentations to various groups and tell their stories.

So, what has this to do with fading memories, you ask?

Well, this lady only has one child and as she is up there in age, she felt her Daughter wouldn’t need all these images and what good where they to anyone when she was gone. She was at a dilemma in regards to what to do with these images. She wants her estate in order and was considering throwing the slides in the trash. She had used the services of a bulk slide scanning service previously. But, as someone who took a lot of care and patience in producing professional quality images, she was very disappointed with the poorly scanned digital files she received back.

(As a side note:- If you see a company offering bulk photo and slide scanning for cheap prices, it is for good reason – Often these images are shipped to 3rd world countries to be scanned and unfortunately quantity over quality is their business model).

So, not wanting to risk more money on another failure and unsure who would want to see these travel photos anyway, she seriously considered throwing them all in the trash.

Well, thankfully before doing so, she consulted her Daughter. Who forbid her Mother from doing such a thing. Her Daughter spent some time researching and found Share My Photographs and after reading our 5 star reviews gave us a call.

We are very thankful she did as one of the main reasons for starting this company was the stories we heard of very important family memories being lost forever with similar stories like this.

In fact just a short while ago, a long time customer called us in tears as her Nephew had thrown all his deceased Mothers images in the trash – He inherited them and though grief and having to deal with the estate was overwhelmed and didn’t want to deal with it – A lifetime of important memories gone forever. Too sad!

Back to our story – We met with the Daughter and Mother and agreed to help them. We have already scanned a large chunk of the collection and been in touch with various local art locations, as well as local press and they are very interested in putting on presentations and possible exhibitions showcasing this local Vancouver B.C travellers fantastic work.

It has been a long time dream of this lady’s to have a book published of her travel images and associated stories. But, she never knew how to achieve this. Well, we are also happy to be helping with that portion too.

The moral of this story is, even if we think no one else will be interested in our old photos, we are often wrong. People love to look at old images and sharing them for many future generations to enjoy is so important to do.

Especially if you have younger family members. They and you may not realize the importance of a photograph at this point. But, when they are all we have left to remember someone by that photo becomes our most precious possession.

So, don’t let your lifetime of memories fade away.
